From Ohiya to Pattipola through Horton Plains (One night camp + Kirigalpoththa Hike)
We went this adventurous journey in April 2017. we started from Peradeniya railway station Sri Lanka. Because of the new year season there was a special night train to Hatton. By that train we went to Hatton and then by night mail we went to Ohiya. It took us nearly 6 hours to travel Ohiya. we started the journey at 6.30am. We walked about 11km to reach Horton Plains. That was a really hard trek with beautiful surroundings.
We kept our bags at the visitors center and then we started Kirigalpoththa hike at 11am. It is not hard to find the road at the beginning, but at the end it is a little bit hard. The total distance to Kirigalpoththa from visitors center is 7km. Hikers should start hiking before 12pm. Anyway, that was a hard hike, but the surrounding view of the peak was so amazing. It is hard to describe using words.
It requires to book a campsite before the camping day. It can be done by visiting the forest department in Baththaramulla. Luckily we got the campsite number 1 and it was the most beautiful campsite in the Horton plains. Campers are not allowed to make a campfire. It is good to take some candles to bear the cold. That night was so cold and little bit misty. Thus the morning was like a dream. It was so beautiful, calm and cold morning.
The second day we started our journey to Pattipola railway station. The total distance to Pattipola from Horton Plain is 11km. We walked to Pattipola and it took us nearly 4 hours to reach there. Then by train we came to Kandy.
